Carol Aune, OD
Carol Aune, OD is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Houston College of Optometry. She is a practicing optometrist as well as a principal investigator for Oculus Research. She has years of experience diagnosing and treating a wide variety of eye disease as well fitting specialty contact lenses. She has been fully trained in clinical research including current GCP training. As the Principal Investigator and Research Director for Oculus Research she implements clinical trial protocols, clinical diagnoses and supervises patient care. She performs all clinical investigator responsibilities and supervision of study staff and site personnel.
Tonica Johnson, MD
Tonica Johnson, MD is a board certified, fellowship trained ophthalmologist. She specializes in cataract surgery and is certified in a wide variety of advanced vision correction procedures including laser cataract surgery to reduce patients’ dependence on glasses. In addition to cataract surgery she also specializes in the care and treatment of patients with dry eyes, cornea diseases, glaucoma and diabetes.
Dr. Johnson has practiced in the Durham and Roxboro areas for the past 12 years and has performed over 7,000 cataract surgeries for patients during that time.
Education and Training
Dr. Johnson graduated from MIT with a BS in electrical engineering. She then went on to complete a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University. After her engineering training she worked as an engineer at Bellcore (formerly, Bell Labs), but had a change of heart and felt drawn to the medical field while participating in volunteer work. A graduate from Emory University School of Medicine, where she attended as a Full Dean Scholar, she completed her ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve University and her cornea fellowship training at Doheny Eye Institute of the University of Southern California.

Dr. Johnson loves traveling to areas in developing countries to help indigent patients who would not have access to medical care without volunteer doctors. So far these countries have included Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Haiti and India. She looks forward to and enjoys these opportunities to share her skills and time through missions trips every year. A certified yoga instructor, she loves teaching yoga, running and reading. Dr. Johnson is conversational in Spanish.
